Guards tortured prisoners, probe finds

An investigation has revealed that at least 16 prisoners were assaulted and tortured by guards at the Kgosi Mampuru II correctional facility in Pretoria.

"The investigation report has revealed there is prima facie evidence that six correctional officials are allegedly implicated in the acts of misconduct.  The investigation further revealed that about 16 offenders were allegedly assaulted," acting provincial commissioner Mandla Mkhabela said in a statement.

"The officials that are implicated should not be placed before a media tribunal as it has a potential of jeopardising fair disciplinary processes."

The investigation follows a complaint laid by Lawyers for Human Rights at the Pretoria Central police station regarding the death of an inmate as well as the assault on several others.

Mkhabela said the investigation further established that there was no "Boko Haram" or officials who called themselves such at the prison.

Disciplinary proceedings were underway.

"However, it needs to be noted that any unlawful act, including torture and assault, will not be tolerated in our correctional centres," he said.
