38 children injured in Pietermaritzburg bus accident

Johannesburg - A total of 38 children between the ages of 4 and 7 were injured on Wednesday afternoon after the bus they were travelling in overturned at the Shive and Regina roads intersection in Northdale, Pietermaritzburg, paramedics said.

"When ER24 paramedics, along with other services, arrived on scene, they found a school bus lying on its side against a residence wall. Children from the bus were found walking around on scene," ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said.

"On assessment, paramedics found that 38 children had sustained minor injuries in the collision. Fortunately no serious or fatal injuries were reported on scene."

Paramedics treated the children and then transported them to various hospitals for further treatment.

"It is understood that the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll," he said.

"Local authorities were on scene for further investigations."
