Outspoken Eastern Cape EFF member Themba Wele has been fired from the party.

The EFF's national leadership has written to Bhisho legislature speaker Noxolo Kiviet informing her of the decision. This follows a disciplinary hearing last week which expelled Wele from the party in absentia after he allegedly failed to turn up on four previous occasions since March, citing ill health.

Sowetan has seen a copy of the letter from the EFF's secretary-general Godrich Gardee to Kiviet. Yesterday legislature spokeswoman Bulelwa Ganyaza confirmed receipt of the letter.

In the letter, dated September 29, Gardee instructs the institution to remove Wele as an MPL from its payroll, revealing that his expulsion has been in effect since September 27 and that he had already been informed. Wele yesterday, however, denied receiving any correspondence from the party concerning his expulsion.

He said he had forwarded the legislature's letter to his legal team who had successfully interdicted implementation of his removal pending an ongoing court challenge of his February suspension.

In the letter, Gardee said the party's national chief whip, Floyd Shivambu, would soon liaise with the Bhisho legislature on Wele's replacement.

The party's disciplinary committee judgment shows that Wele was charged with five counts of misconduct.

They include allegations that he attended an unauthorised press briefing in King Williams Town in November, refused to carry out officially sanctioned duties, appointed a personal assistant without the party's authorisation and withdrew his participation in organisational structures.

Wele, who said he would not go down without a fight, said the charges did not hold water and that he was being persecuted for calling for a forensic investigation into how the EFF's legislature funds were "misused" by the party's national leaders.

Gardee and EFF spokesman Mbuyiseni Ndlozi could not be reached for comment yesterday.
