Police have launched a manhunt following the escape of a prisoner from the Atteridgeville Prison near Pretoria on Wednesday afternoon.
Police spokesperson Colonel Amelia Dreyer said the 29-year-old offender escaped while prisoners were engaged in sport activities on the sports field.
He was dressed in his prison uniform. The circumstances surrounding his escape were unclear‚ Col Dreyer said.
“The police as well as other law enforcement agencies assisted with the search but the suspect has not been arrested yet. The escapee was serving a four-year sentence for vehicle theft.
“A case of escaping from lawful custody has been opened at Pretoria Central SAPS for further police investigation‚” Col Dreyer said.
