Mandela grandson appears in court for rape

Nelson Mandela’s grandson‚ who is in his 20s‚ appeared briefly in the Johannesburg magistrate’s court this afternoon facing a charge of rape and sexual assault.

The case stood down as his legal team tried to secure a letter from the station commander at Parkview Police station‚ that would allow him to be held there until his bail application on Friday.

According to police spokeswoman Brigadier Mashadi Selepe‚ the alleged incident happened at a well-known restaurant in Greenside on August 7.

“The victim said that on that night‚ she was there with her friends‚ and the accused was there with his‚” said Selepe.

The alleged rape took place‚ said Selepe‚ when the victim went to the toilet and was followed by the accused. She added that the alleged incident took place in a cubicle.

The victim is 15 years old and is considered a minor. Her accused is facing a shedule 6 classified crime.

Selepe said that the victim was physically examined on Friday August 14 when the case was opened. The accused was arrested on Friday and was held over the weekend at Parkview police station
