The mayor of Ekurhuleni‚ Mondli Gungubele on Thursday condemned the ongoing taxi violence in Tembisa‚ and appealed to the feuding parties to sit around the table and resolve their issues peacefully.

“That we have lost one person and three others were injured as a result of the violence is a cause of great concern.

“It cannot be that when people disagree on something‚ they then turn to the barrel of a gun for a solution. When such a thing happens‚ innocent people are injured‚ families lose bread winners and children lose their parents‚” he said.

Gungubele commended the police for their swift reaction which resulted in the arrest of five suspects.

“Now that we have people behind bars‚ we shall rely on our courts to ensure that the guilty are effectively dealt with.”

The five men linked to the shootings‚ which claimed the life of a 45-year-old mother of two‚ were arrested on Tuesday night.

The fighting is believed to have been sparked by a feud between Tembisa Alexandra Taxi Association (Tata) and Midrand Taxi Association (Mita) fighting over two new routes.
