MPs remarks following Nkandla visit

The first visit to President Jacob Zuma's private residence in Nkandla by the Members of Parliament has clarified a lot of things.

MPs including ANC members have insinuated and agreed with reports from the Public Protector and others that the costs at Nkandla were inflated.

Speaking at the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature in Pietermaritzburg, ANC's MP Mmamoloko Kubayi said that she had mixed feelings following the visit on Wednesday.

Kubayi said that what they saw in Nkandla was not what they were made to believe.

"I did not see a visitor's center - it was a reception area. There is no amphitheater, it's some gathering point."

"I don't know how amphitheater was used to describe that place. Terminology is highly misleading."

"People were saying the cattle in Nkandla live better than South Africans. But that's a normal kraal."

On the R6million bachelor pads - Kubayi said that from what they have seen, they are not worth R1million and that they cannot even be compared to that upmarket houses in Sandton.

"Escalations are very vivid and clear. My observation is that there's no security let alone comfort," she said, calling for accountability and for heads to roll.

UDM MP Nqabayomzi Kwankwa said that there was definitely a waste of state resources and questions around who must account should be asked.

"If we shift blame to officials, it would be allowing the tail to wag the dog. The buck stops with the president," he said.

"When costs were escalated where did the money go to? If the president asked for a bigger kraal he must pay for it."

ANC MP Doris Dlakude said that the houses in Nkandla are thatched and should fire break out, everything will burn down. She said there is no equipment connected to the firepool to take the fire out.

On the chicken run and kraal - she said they were made to believe there are showers, tiles and beds for the animals but they found nothing like that.

"Money was chowed there. The state was defrauded I mean even standard of reception area is small with plastic chairs," she added.
