South Africans knit scarves for Mandela project

“I am not lost — If you are cold and need me‚ take me.” This is the message on notes pinned to hand-knitted scarves that were tied to trees‚ lamp posts and public spaces across South Africa on Thursday as part of the 67 Blankets for Mandela project.

The scarves were knitted by volunteers and offered free to the needy.

“We hope to brighten our streets and our parks and bring some colour to people who need a little luck‚ love and warmth in their lives‚” project founder Carolyn Steyn posted on Facebook.

“Thank you to each and every single KnitWit for Madiba who slaved away making such beautiful scarves. I take my hats off to you all for your belief and unwavering energy. Today will prove that your efforts have not been in vain. Today your efforts will make a difference in so many lives.”

The 67 Blankets for Mandela project has already handed out over 6700 blankets‚ also hand-made by volunteers‚ countrywide. This was after the project set a new world record earlier this year: The 3133 square metres of blankets knitted or crocheted by the KnitWits were sewn together and laid out at Madiba’s statue at the Union Buildings lawn — achieving the record of being the largest area covered by a blanket.

On July 18‚ Nelson Mandela International Day‚ everyone is encouraged to spend 67 minutes on a worthy cause.

President Jacob Zuma plans to officially open a newly upgraded state of the art school in Mvezo‚ in the Eastern Cape where he will help reinforce the existing perimeter fence “by securing an extra mesh wire around the school in order to prevent the livestock from grazing inside the premises of the school”. The President will also participate in the planting of 67 Umkhanyakude trees at Mvezo‚ which is Mandela’s birthplace.

If you’re interested but unsure what to do with your 67 minutes‚ here is an easy way to find a meaningful task: Log onto For Good (www.forgood.co.za) to find a cause in your area that has listed a need and sign up to help them. Alternatively‚ create an offer around a specific skill you have or something special you want to do and an interested cause will contact you.
