The ANC has “one-sidedly” changed the name of the North West to Bokone Bophirima‚ the Tswana translation of the province’s name‚ the Afrikaner cultural rights activist organisation AfriForum charged on Sunday.

Saying the name change was a big shock to many in the country‚ AfriForum said it had noticed the new name on the official website of the province.

“This devious change is unacceptable. Place names cannot merely be changed overnight in accordance to political trends‚” Marcus Pawson‚ provincial coordinator for AfriForum in the North West said.

“AfriForum is of the view that the ANC has no sense of responsible management in the province and that this step was taken in an attempt to compensate for the human rights violations in the province‚ as basic services cannot even be delivered properly.

“AfriForum wants to know in terms of which legislation the name has been changed‚ as the South African Geographical Names Council does not have the jurisdiction to approve provincial name changes‚” Pawson said.

“In 2009‚ the ANC – in a document which the party’s National Executive Committee compiled — described their own cadres in the province as people who do not have any regard for the South African legal system. Given the problems in the North West‚ the ANC has done away with democracy and constitutional principles‚” Pawson asserted.

He said AfriForum would intensify its campaign against the name change
