Jenna Lowe remembered as ‘a fighter who has left a lasting legacy’

Tributes are pouring in for Cape Town’s Jenna Lowe‚ the young woman with a rare disease who campaigned for more South Africans to become organ donors.

Lowe‚ who fell ill at the age of 17 and was subsequently diagnosed with pulmonary arterial hypertension‚ had a double lung transplant in December but remained in hospital after complications set in. She died on Monday‚ a few months short of her 21st birthday party‚ on October 24.

Her #GetMeTo21 donor awareness campaign has seen over 4‚600 people sign up to become organ donors so far. To receive an invitation to her birthday party‚ guests were asked to register as an organ donor.

News of her death began trending on social media as South Africans praised her bravery and selflessness in trying to help others while fighting for her own life.

Busi Skinne Mjiyakho @skinne–bee tweeted: “She didn’t make it to 21 but because of her so many people will #RIPJennaLowe #getmeto21”.

“Few people get to inspire during a lifetime & I think that Jenna did this & more during her short time on earth. Thank you #RIPJennaLowe‚” Jamey du Plessis @Miss–Jay–D said on Twitter.

“Come on #SouthAfrica less than 1% are organ donors? So easy to save 7 lives...#getmeto21‚” wrote BrokenBadger @BrokenBadger.

Jacqui Stephenson @jax–stephenson posted‚ “Very sad news — #JennaLowe (#getmeto21) has passed away. Such an inspirational girl who encouraged so many to sign up as organ donors”.

“The heroic Jenna Lowe’s legacy will outlive us all. So let us mourn her loss by celebrating her remarkable life. #GetMeTo21 #RIPJennaLowe‚” said Erik Salamon @eriweri.

Laura Newnham @LauraNewnhamZA tweeted‚ “I had the pleasure of meeting Jenna’s mom Gabi in Dec and was touched by the family’s story #RIPJennaLowe”.

Kyle Brown @kylegbrown posted: “Incredibly painful to hear that @jennalowe94 has lost her battle. Your legacy shines bright. Rest in Peace Hero! #getmeto21 #donor”.

Delphine Govender @Delphine–DG offered these words of comfort to her family and friends: “Life isn’t about the years you live but the impact you make — you lived a huge life Jenna Lowe – RIP”.

Even the Western Cape rugby franchise sent out a message for her‚ tweeting: “RIPJennaLowe — a great friend of the DHLStormers and a true fighter who has left a lasting legacy”.
