Three men were arrested in the early hours of Wednesday after they were caught with copper wire weighing 50kg.

The copper has a street value of R100‚000‚ the South African Police Service said in a statement.

The men‚ from Virginia in the Free State‚ were caught just outside Excelsior.

Police suspect the copper wire was taken from inside an electrical transformer.

“One of the arrested suspects is a former employee of an electricity supplier and it is suspected that he used his skills to cut the transformer.”

The three suspects were arrested for possession of suspected stolen property and they are expected to appear in court soon.
