201km/h driver also has pending drunk driving‚ theft cases

A 29-year-old Durban woman who allegedly clocked a speed of 201km/h in her BMW 1-Series on the N2 said she was late for a funeral.

Thobile P Gumede allegedly told Road Traffic Inspectorate officer Timothy Simpson‚ who had pulled her over for speeding near Park Rynie on the N2 South on Saturday‚ that she was on her way to a funeral in Bizana in the Eastern Cape.

She was arrested and released on R5000 bail ahead of her first appearance in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The matter was adjourned to May 18 for her to obtain legal representation.

KwaZulu-Natal transport department spokesman Nathi Sukazi said Gumede had pending drunk driving and theft cases against her.

“Of course‚ as a department we take strong exception to deliberate violations of road traffic rules‚ no matter the reasons. Until such time that we all‚ as road users‚ take individual and collective responsibility for road safety‚ we will never stop the continuing carnage.

“We urge all road users to respect road traffic rules and above all value life‚ your own personal life and the next person’s‚” he said.
