Former Jomo Cosmos and Bafana Bafana player Lebo Morula faces fines of up to R5-million if convicted on charges of illegally possessing a signal jamming device.

On Friday, Morula and two other men, Obed Sihlangu and Sizabantu Mngadi, appeared in the Boksburg Regional Court to face charges of contravening the Electronic Communications Act.

Sihlangu faces an additional charge of impersonating a police officer.

Morula was part of a 10-man gang that was arrested for allegedly attempting to rob a truck carrying cigarettes in Boksburg last week.

Police allegedly found a signal jamming device in the men's possession.

This was the third time Morula was arrested with a signal jamming device.

In February he was arrested for armed robbery and unauthorised possession of a signal jamming device with Mamelodi mechanic Billy Malope and Joburg taxi driver and Zimbabwean national Thabani Twala.

They had allegedly tried to rob the Standard Bank branch in Ogies of R3.4-million.

Last year police allegedly found him in possession of the device when they arrested him for car theft.

When police announced Morula's arrest last week, he was with nine other men, but seven of them did not appear in court on Friday.

Police have previously bungled at least one case involving Morula.

In October last year he was arrested for a robbery in Klipgat in North West, but the case was later withdrawn. The investigating officer in the Ogies robbery case, Sergeant Isaac Gumede, said his colleagues had not done a proper investigation.

Police spokesman Lt Kay Makhubele said investigations into the 10 men's conspiracy to commit robbery would continue.

"The court needs tangible evidence to prove that a crime has been committed," he said.

Makhubele said the fact that Morula was released on bail in the Ogies case did not mean he was off the hook.

"Bail is a right, a court decision. It has nothing to do with the police," he said.

Morula and his co-accused will apply for bail next Monday.
