The DA on Monday visited the High Commission of the Republic of Mozambique in Pretoria to convey its sympathies with the people of Mozambique following the death of Emmanuel Sithole in Alexandra on Saturday‚ the party’s national spokesperson Phumzile van Damme said in a statement.
“We were welcomed into the high commission‚ and handed over flowers as a sign of condolence‚” Van Damme said.
“The monstrous and barbaric attack on Sithole is a national shame for all the people in South Africa who respect life and dignity and live by the spirit of Ubuntu.
“His killers must be brought to justice‚ and the full might of the law must be brought to bear on them.”
Van Damme said xenophobia has no place in the democratic South Africa.
“We acknowledge that people in South Africa are angry at the shortage of opportunities and ever-decreasing chances to find meaningful work. This is a fight we must continue to constructively wage in order to bring about a society where opportunities abound‚ backed by a capable state‚” she said.
She added that anger can never justify the hate and violence the country is witnessing.
She said the violent death of Emmanuel Sithole should remind South Africans that xenophobia is a most hateful curse to any country.
“Where xenophobia is encouraged and fuelled by leaders and elites‚ it must be condemned in the strongest terms. And where the incited xenophobia leads to violent murders on our streets‚ those leaders have blood on their hands.”
Van Damme said King Goodwill Zwelithini held an Imbizo on Monday meant to quell xenophobic violence‚ but instead used it to deflect all criticism from himself.
“Attacks on the media and blaming a third force will not bring calm to xenophobia-fuelled violence. This failure of leadership has done a disservice to our country.
“The life of Emmanuel Sithole must not be lost in vain. His death must remind us that our neighbours‚ our brothers and our sisters are part of us‚ as we are part of them. We must not forget our common humanity.
“Justice must be done for this dreadful crime. We welcome the arrests following Mr Sithole’s murder and trust that convictions will follow.”
She said the DA extends its sincerest condolences to all the people of the Republic of Mozambique.
