Rich rapist could have paid for sex

A MAGISTRATE in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court told a convicted rapist he should not have committed the crime because he was rich and could easily have afforded the services of sex-workers.

Magistrate David Makhoba said this before sentencing Samuel Adebamowe, 41, a rich Nigerian national, to 15 years in jail.

"He [Adebamowe] is a man of high calibre. He is said to have been a director of a big company and also lives in a mansion worth millions," Makhoba said during sentencing.

"But his actions speak otherwise. There are sex-workers he could have gone to," he said.

Adebamowe, who is of Nigerian origin but is now a South African citizen, is accused of raping a 22-year-old woman in September 2012.

It is alleged he picked her up on a street in Sunnyside, Pretoria, and told her he was heading to a club he owned in the area.

He then allegedly reneged and took her to a mansion in Centurion where he raped her.

A doctor who examined the woman told the court earlier that she was menstruating, and the tampon she had on was thrust further down her vagina during the incident.

Magistrate Makhoba described Adebamowe, who he said often came to court "wearing expensive suits", as having an inner urge to do serious crimes.

"He is educated but he uses this education to exploit others."

Adebamowe's lawyer had asked the court not to impose the minimum sentence of 10 years' imprisonment, but Makhoba said it was fitting that he imposed a sentence that reflected the nature of the crime.

He handed Adebamowe a 15-year sentence.
