Workers at South Africa’s Eskom Medupi power plant have embarked on a one day strike, protesting against poor living conditions and demanding higher pay at the facility which is under construction, a local radio reported on Wednesday.

“They are doing this especially to black workers, there is no white person staying in that hostel. This is discrimination,” said Steve Nhlapho, an organiser at the National Union of Metalworkers said on Talk Radio 702.

This adds to the pile of problems the energy supplier is facing following the suspension of four executives including the CEO Tshediso Matona.

Recently, the Eskom board declared that they want chairman Zola Tsotsi out.

All board members agreed on a motion of no confidence in Tsotsi in a board meeting in which sources close to the board stated that the main reason behind the motion is that Tsotsi has no understanding of governance.
