'EFF to stay in red overalls or go nude'

The EFF would go nude in the National Assembly if they were to be barred from wearing their red overalls, gumboots and maid uniforms, The Star reported on Monday.

Economic Freedom Fighter's leader Julius Malema told the paper they would not take dress code instructions from Parliament.

"We are going to wear them (overalls)," he was quoted as saying.

"If they don't want them, we will take off those overalls and walk naked, If that's what they want to see, they will see it," he said.

Parliament was working towards toughening several regulations for the National Assembly, including MPs dress code.

Rules subcommittee chairman Richard Mdakane said they hoped to finalise the regulations by the end of next month, reported The Star.

Malema openly rejected the proposed changes which would mostly likely require the EFF to swap their worker's gear for a more formal look.

"We are not going to dress like colonial masters... I am wearing an overall, it's clean and I am not smelly," he told The Star.

"I'm actually smelling better than many other people who are wearing suits there."

In an interview with Sapa last week, EFF MP Godrich Gardee said they would never accept the dress code.

"It will never happen. We are here to do serious work, not to discuss dress codes," he told Sapa.

"Where will it end? Next thing they will be telling us which colour underwear to wear and how to speak," Gardee said.
