Two in court for murder and stokvel theft

Two men suspected of robbing stokvel members of their money‚ killing one on them‚ have appeared in the Magistrate’s Court at Nongoma in Kwazulu-Natal on charges of murder‚ house robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Simiso Ndebele (32) and Mduduzi Luthuli (33) allegedly burst into premises in the Ezincingweni area on December 5 while Thoko Hlatshwayo (57) and other stokvel members were busy counting and dividing money among one another.

According to police spokesman Brigadier Jay Naicker‚ the victims fought back and screamed for help but the suspects opened fire on them‚ fatally wounding Hlatshwayo in the chest.

“The suspects took the money and fled the scene on foot. The stokvel members screamed and shouted for help while chasing the suspects. Members of the community came to their rescue and apprehended one suspect. The 32-year-old man was found in possession of the money and was arrested for murder and house robbery by Nongoma police.

“On 8 December 2015 at 18:30‚ police received information of a man in possession of an unlicensed firearm at KwaHolinyoka area‚ Nongoma. When police arrived at the premises they found a 33-year-old man in possession of a 9mm pistol with its serial number filed off as well as 16 rounds of ammunition‚ cash and two cell phones.

“The man is suspected to be linked to Hlatshwayo’s murder. The firearm will be subjected to ballistic tests to ascertain if it was used in Hlatshwayo’s murder‚” Brig Naicker said.

The two suspects have been remanded in custody till December 23 when they will appear in court again.
