DA rates Parliament's performance

President Jacob Zuma answered 20 oral questions during five appearances in the National Assembly this year, the DA said on Monday.

According to the DA's review of work done during the year, it said:

- Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa answered 42 questions in the National Assembly seven times;

- The National Assembly had a total of 22 sittings this year, but it only sat 76% of the time;

- The DA said it had tabled 223 motions for debate on issues ranging from the economy and the high unemployment rate, to the lack of higher education funding;

-Forty-five bills were introduced in Parliament this year and of those bills, eight were signed into law while another 12 bills are awaiting approval by Zuma;

- The DA asked 3 469 (82.5%) of the total 4 204 written questions in the National Assembly this year; the EFF submitted 146 questions (3.5%), the ANC submitted 39 questions (0.9%). Other opposition parties asked a total of 550 (13.1%) questions;

- It found that in the National Council of Provinces, programmes were released too late for preparation; and,

- Provinces toe the party line instead of deciding what is best for their own province.
