Postmortem confirms that robbery suspect was ‘executed’

The postmortem on the man killed by Krugersdorp police in an apparent execution last month confirmed that he had been executed‚ as shown in camera footage of the event.

The Sunday Times reported that police shot and killed a suspect fleeing the scene of a robbery‚ even after he had been disarmed and injured. The incident was caught on CCTV footage.

Briefing Parliament on the events around the execution‚ the Independent Police Investigative Directorate’s (Ipid) Robbie Raburabu said that‚ initially‚ the police officers involved had indicated that the man had been shot during an exchange of gunfire with police.

After the video emerged‚ “we saw that it was actually an execution and not the way it was told to us by the officers at the scene”‚ he said.

Raburabu said they had attempted to arrest those involved on Thursday‚ before the matter appeared in the press‚ but one of the officers had been in Limpopo.

Four police officers were arrested on Monday and appeared in court on Tuesday. Three are charged with murder and defeating the ends of justice‚ while the fourth has been charged with defeating the ends of justice.
