Village mob lynch muthi murder suspect

Fear has gripped the community of GaMaleboho in Senwabarwana, Limpopo, following the brutal murder of a three-year-old boy on Monday.

The body of Frederick Makeke was found in a room at his parents' home in Eldorado village on Monday afternoon.

Little Frederick had been decapitated and his private parts cut off and found lying next to his body.

A grinder believed to have been used in the murder was also found on the scene.

A handyman hired to build the roof of the Makeke house was accused of the boy's murder and killed by the community. The man, known only as Emmanuel from Venda, was assaulted before being hanged.

Police spokeswoman Lieutenant-Colonel Ronel Otto said yesterday that no one had been arrested in connection with the boy's murder or the mob killing.

Villagers said that they feared for the safety of their children following the incident.

"We are afraid to leave our children unattended after the gruesome killing of the boy in the village. We no longer know who to trust," said villager Mahlodi Mathekgane, 35.

Another villager, Samuel Ratsaka, 68, a resident of neighbouring Loncordia village, said he had lived in the area since birth and had never thought that such a gruesome killing would happen in his neighbourhood.

"I am still shocked and angry at what happened to the boy. I wish the killer could be found to explain what the boy did to deserve such kind of brutality."

Nchete Serakalala from neighbouring Pax village said he knew Emmanuel as a carpenter and that he was good at his work.

"Emmanuel built the roof of my house in 2012 and did an excellent job. I do not know him quite well but the man can do a good job," said Serakalala.

During the visit to the family yesterday, the boy's uncle Masilo Mpashi declined to be interviewed, saying the family would speak to the media after the funeral on Saturday.

"We do not want any journalist as the family is still in mourning. Please allow us space to mourn our dead son," Mpashi said.
