SAMWU strike won’t commence on Monday

The legal team representing the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) has notified City Power that its planned strike action will not commence on Monday‚ as per media reports‚ the electricity provider says.

This latest development follows a decision by SAMWU to serve City Power with a notice to strike‚ raising fears that the residents of Johannesburg will be plunged into darkness‚ reminiscent of the illegal strike that took place two years ago‚ City Power said in a statement on Sunday.

“City Power wishes to reassure the residents of the City of Johannesburg of its ongoing commitment to provide a steady and uninterrupted electricity supply‚ regardless of whether the industrial action goes ahead or not‚” it added.

City Power reiterated that its mandate to supply electricity to the residents of Johannesburg was regarded as an essential service and‚ by extension‚ its infrastructure had been declared a national key point.

“Consequently‚ any threats against its network or acts of deliberate and illegal tampering with its property constitute a criminal offence that is liable for criminal prosecution. City Power perceives this threat by the trade union as criminal and not in the interest of the entire union membership‚” the electricity supplier warned.

It asserted that SAMWU had made a number of “unsubstantiated and libelous allegations against City Power Managing Director Sicelo Xulu and has cited these unfounded claims as part of the reasons they were planning to down tools”.

“City Power Board Chairperson‚ Rev Frank Chikane has requested SAMWU to provide concrete evidence to substantiate these allegations but to no avail. The City Power Board wishes to reaffirm its commitment to resolving the matter as speedily and amicably as possible‚” it stated.

“City Power wishes to assure ratepayers that in the event of a strike it will put contingency plans in place to ensure that the lights stay on.

“Meanwhile‚ City Power has noted that some of its employees who were previously contracted to Grinpal have not shown up for work. City Power is committed to maintaining a high performance culture and to that end‚ internal disciplinary process are in the process of being instituted against these employees.

“City Power has a mandate to provide quality service to the residents of Johannesburg and will therefore not tolerate non-performance. City Power remains committed to sound labour relations and providing reliable distribution of electricity to the residents of Johannesburg‚” the electricity supplier added .
