SAPS and business pledge to root out crime

The South African Police Service (SAPS)‚ the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa (CGCSA)‚ the South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC)‚ the Ekurhuleni Municipality and the Community Police Forum on Tuesday signed a pledge committing to work together to reduce crime in the banking‚ consumer goods and retail sectors.

“As part of its efforts to address crime and its concomitant challenges‚ the SAPS has been entering into various sort of agreements with industry-specific organisations in order to be better placed to address and understand risks associated with crime impacting on these industries‚” SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said.

“The CGCSA‚ which represents various stakeholders in the consumer goods industry such as the manufacturers‚ transporters and retailers of consumer goods‚ has been badly affected as its members were at times being repeatedly robbed‚ both at the malls and while in transit.

“Over and above these robberies‚ shopliftings have become the norm for retailers and‚ as a result‚ major retailers are reportedly losing hefty amounts of cash annually.”

Naidoo said that Alberton‚ which fell under the Ekurhuleni Metro in Gauteng’s east rand‚ had been badly affected by these crimes.

In its pledge‚ the SAPS also said‚ “we further pledge to work together to stabilise and normalise the situation in Alberton in terms of the agreed quick win intervention plans adopted between SAPS‚ SABRIC and CGCSA to specifically focus on crimes in the banking‚ consumer goods and retail sectors”.

As part of the pledge‚ the organisations will work jointly in their quest to eliminate crime hotspots‚ share knowledge‚ expertise and experience between them.

The pledge would also enhance a multi-disciplinary approach at strategic level‚ and implementation of all ensuing strategies and projects at an operational level.

This multi-disciplinary approach would include sharing of information and intelligence in combating consumer goods-related crimes and ensuring the successful prosecution of offenders.
