Wayde van Niekerk wins gold for South Africa

South Africa’s Wayde van Niekerk caused a sensational upset at the world athletics championships in Beijing when he won the 400m final in a time of 43.48 seconds.

After yesterday’s semi-final‚ Van Niekerk was quoted saying: “I came here to win a medal“. His determination paid off as he saw off the much-fancied Kirani James of Grenada and reigning world champion LaShawn Merritt of the US.

Van Niekerk’s win came after sprinter Anaso Jobodwana made it into the 200m final after running a close second to Usain Bolt in his semi-final.
