Claims of police brutality after video of Douglasdale 'assault' emerges

On their way home from Douglasdale in Fourways Johannesburg last Tuesday at 3:30am, two men were approached by two police officers who allegedly assaulted one of them by putting him in a choke hold while the other officer searched his anus and genitals.

Using the pseudonyms Anton and Shane, the men tell their account of the event in a Youtube video.

According to Shane, the police officers asked them to get out of their vehicle. Shane was quick to react and jump out while Anton was "slower."

The officers started dragging Anton out of the car and warned Shane not to move as he approached the officers, "If you move, I will kill you."

Preoccupied with Anton, Shane slowly moved to the car to get his phone and began secretly recording the assault.

Anton is heard complaining in Afrikaans that he couldn't breathe before passing out as one of the officers held him down in a choke hold.

The other officer pulled down Anton's pants and began an anal cavity search and then turned him over to search his genitals.

The police officers then waited for Anton to wake up before leaving.

Anton sustained several injuries, including injuries to his head, mouth, knees and ankle.

Both men are still uncertain why they were stopped and assaulted.

Shane said he thought it happened because: "We are two young guys and also I think it's because we're white."

"A case has been opened by the complainant. Numerous charges will be added after we have reviewed the video footage," Douglasdale police spokesperson Warrant Officer Balan Muthan told News24.
