Former Jozi FM DJ Donald Sebolai has apologised to the family of his slain girlfriend Flavia Rachel “Dolly” Tshabalala.
Sebolai‚ 38‚ who is also known as “DJ Donald Duck”‚ apologised on Thursday from the dock while testifying in his own defence at the South Gauteng High Court‚ sitting at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court southeast of Johannesburg.
He is accused of stabbing his girlfriend Tshabalala‚ 32‚ to death after the couple had a fight at his Soweto flat last year.
The DJ also faces charges of theft and defeating the ends of justice for allegedly stealing Tshabalala’s car and removing evidence from the crime scene.
He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
“I know Dolly’s family is hurting more than I am. If her family is here in court today‚ I would like to ask for their forgiveness.”
“I sometimes think I should have stood there and allowed her to stab me. This might take me my whole life to get over. I sometimes have images of the fight that led to her death.”
Outside of court‚ Elizabeth Dikeledi Marawa‚ the mother of Tshabalala‚ said she was not willing to accept Sebolai’s apology.
“I cannot accept this apology whilst he chooses to continue lying to the court”‚ said Marawa.
Sebolai rejected testimony earlier by the investigating officer Oupa Khubeka that the DJ hated women.
“I was born by a woman‚ I have been in women’s campaign. My daughter is a girl who will one day grow up to be a woman.”
During his testimony earlier in the week‚ the DJ told the court that he spent the days immediately after Tshabalala’s death walking around Soweto aimlessly and confused‚ not thinking of what he ate or if he bathed‚ but only of what had happened to Tshabalala.
It was only on the day of his arrest‚ on July 8‚ that Sebolai came to his senses and decided to hand himself over to the police‚ he said.
