Rewards to ‘strengthen investigations’ into Mpumalanga cop killings

Mpumalanga police offered a combined R250000 cash reward to anyone with information on the murders of a traffic official and police constable.

Johannes Mahlangu‚ 50‚ a Middelburg traffic department cost centre head‚ was shot and killed on July 4 at his parental home in Vlaklaagte No2 near KwaMhlanga.

He was ambushed while he was reversing his car. Mahlangu was rushed to a local clinic where he was certified dead on arrival.

A R100000 reward is being offered for information that could lead police to his killers.

On July 18‚ Constable Joseph Hlongwane‚ 36‚ was fatally shot when he responded to a call about a business robbery.

His assailants were apparently on top of a roof of the shop which was being robbed. Hlongwane was stationed at the Vaalbank police station near KwaMhlanga.

A reward of R150000 is being offered for information on his murder.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Dumisa Magadlela said the rewards would help the police in strengthening their investigations.

“We believe that the community will surely come forth with information that will assist the police to speedily resolve these cases. The approval of these rewards does not mean that the police are doing nothing with an attempt to trace those responsible.

“There are task teams formed that are currently in place comprising of different roleplayers. We want to unleash all avenues that will assist in the investigations‚” said Magadlela.

Anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the perpetrators is requested to contact Lieutenant-Colonel Gladys Mahlangu on 082 372 2131 for the murder of Mahlangu.
