CPUT accommodates ANC elective conference after sponsor bails

The African National Congress (ANC) in the Western Cape has had to move its elective conference from the world-class Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) at the eleventh hour.

That’s after an unnamed “sponsor” who promised to pay for the venue pulled out two days before the conference‚ which starts on Saturday.

The party announced at lunch time on Friday that it was still locked in a provincial executive committee meeting discussing conference preparations.

At a press conference‚ provincial secretary Songezo Mjongile said the conference will now be held at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) Bellville campus.

“[The] ANC is an NGO (non-governmental organisation)‚ we depend on the generosity of sponsorship. Now the sponsorship that was confirmed‚ when we realised 48 hours before the event that they are not coming through‚ we therefore [had] to work on plan B‚” said Mjongile.

Quizzed further about the eleventh hour change of venue‚ Mjongile said: “Whether the meeting was held under the tree‚ in the bedroom or wherever but we are fortunate that CPUT was able to accommodate us in such a short notice‚” he said.

In the past four years‚ the party has been at loggerheads with the DA-run City of Cape Town for their failure to pay for their 2011 elective congress.

The city is a majority shareholder at the CTICC and it had to go to court to force the ANC to pay up. After a number of promises‚ the ANC finally settled its R1.5-million bill earlier this year.
