Lesufi to announce action on race allegations at Curro Roodeplaat

Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi will on Friday make known his decision on possible action to be taken following new allegations of racial segregation at Curro Roodeplaat Independent School.

A video apparently showing learners separated into two groups — black and white — as they prepare for a field trip surfaced earlier this month.

Media outlets said that an incensed Lesufi was requesting the school’s financial backers to withdraw funding in an attempt to force its closure.

One of the school’s investors is the Public Investment Corporation‚ “a registered financial services provider‚ which is wholly owned by the South African government”.

“There will never be an inch of racism that will happen under my watch‚” the MEC was quoted as saying.

Asked if he was considering legal action against the school‚ Lesufi would only say: “Watch this space.”

In a statement on Thursday‚ Lesufi’s office said he would “brief the media on his decision” about the school.

Earlier this year‚ Curro Roodeplaat made headlines after it was accused of segregating school classes according to race.

The school responded at the time that it was a dual-medium school‚ and most of the children being taught in Afrikaans were white‚ and many of the English learners were black.
