Senzo Meyiwa killer still unknown: Police

Almost a year later, the South African Police Service has confirmed that they still do not know who killed Senzo Meyiwa.

“At the end of the day what we want is to find out who killed Senzo Meyiwa and why they did it. We are not at a stage where we can say that we have information at this point in time that can bring about clarity and answer that key question,” SAPS spokesperson Solomon Makgale said.

“But we have not stopped working, we have received a lot of information, we need to go through it. We’ve collected a lot of material that is of evidential value. Our forensics are looking at it.”

Makgale urged the public and the Meyiwa family to give them space to do their job.

“So it is a question of time and it is a question of patience. We are asking the Meyiwa family, we are asking the general public to give us the space to conduct a thorough investigation.”

Makgale said that there had been false reports claiming that the police had dropped the investigation.

“Contrary to media reports, we are working very hard, we’ve got a dedicated team, they do nothing else but focus on this investigation”, he said.

Makgale revealed that they do not give regular updates on the case anymore because they are facing an issue of evading witnesses for fear of being victimised.

He said that one of their witnesses has gone into hiding after Sam Meyiwa revealed in an interview that the police were looking for that particular witness.

“What concerns us a lot is the fact that we are required, as part of standards to give the family feedback. Now the minute we give them feedback, as we leave the house already the information that we’ve given to the family is all over the media.”

“We are now sitting with a situation where in one instance somebody that we have questioned has decided to go underground because they heard through the media after Senzo Meyiwa’s father granted an interview that the police are looking for them,” explained Makgale.

Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa was killed at his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo's home in Vosloorus last October.

Insurance payout

The SAPS also dismissed recent reports stating that the football player’s family were still unable to access funds from their son’s insurance policy due to the on-going investigation.

“We can confirm that Senzo's father approached the investigators indicating that he was upset with the police because the insurance company wouldn't pay out until the investigation has been completed.

“We informed him that the payout can still take place although the investigation is not complete. The only time the payout could be delayed due to a pending investigation is if the police believed that there was foul play involving life insurance money. This is not the case in this murder investigation. Senzo's father therefore appears to have been misled.”
