The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called for the removal of tax on all condoms.

This call was made by the party’s youth during the DA congress at the Nelson Mandela Bay where new leader Mmusi Maimane was elected.

DA Youth Leader Yusuf Cassim said that a lot of young people get pregnant and contract diseases because they do not want to use free government condoms.

“We are making this call in order to curb teenage pregnancy because there is a stigma around ‘Choice’ condoms,” said Cassim.

The DA Youth believe that condoms like Durex among others are more expensive because of tax and that should tax be removed, they would be a bit more affordable.

According to Cassim, condom manufacturing companies would not lose any profit and would not be affected should the government support the call to “remove tax on safe sex”.

DA Youth believe that by taxing people on condoms, the government is inadvertently taxing people for wanting to have safe sex.

This is part of DA’s strategy to fight the spread of HIV/AIDS, and they believe including commercially sold condoms could assist in the fight.

“On behalf of the Mvelaphanda Day we call on government to declare condoms an essential product and for VAT to be removed on all condoms to promote their use as far as possible,” said DA Youth Representative Thamba Chauke.

Cassim said that they have also made similar tax free calls for textbooks.
