The taxi driver responsible for the death of mountain biker Burry Stander will be sentenced in July.
The Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday adjourned sentencing to July 1 after hearing arguments from state and defence.
Correctional services official Skhumbuzo Dladla told the court that Njabulo Nyawose‚ who has been convicted of culpable homicide‚ was a suitable candidate for correctional supervision as opposed to direct imprisonment.
Stander‚ 25‚ was killed while cycling in Shelly Beach in KwaZulu-Natal in January 2013. Stander competed in the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games and narrowly missed a medal a year before his death. He was the under-23 men’s cross-country champion of the 2009 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup and came third in the mountain bike world championships in Canada in 2010.
