E-Tolls in numbers

Fewer and fewer Gautengers are registering as new e-toll users every month‚ transport minister Dipuo Peters has revealed.

Answering a parliamentary question put by Freedom Front Plus MP Anton Alberts‚ Peters said the number of newly registering e-toll users in Gauteng has plummeted from over 350‚000 per month to just under 20‚000 last month‚ over a period oftwo years‚ according to transport minister Dipuo Peters.

Despite this‚ Peters thanked “law abiding” road users for registering and paying.

According to figures released by Peters yesterday‚ 356‚766 e-tags were registered in December 2013. That figure now stands at 20‚104 for April this year.

“Notwithstanding the unfortunate pronouncements and continuous encouragement by the detractors of the project‚ law abiding citizens have continued to register and pay — they do the right thing. For that we thank them‚” said Peters.

She said the de-registration of vehicles is a “moving target” due to the nature of management of fleets by fleet owners.

“Fleet owners change their fleets‚ old vehicles are de-registered and new ones registered‚” said Peters.

She also revealed that monthly expenditure for the SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) stood at R66 million‚ with the bulk of the costs going to toll operations and maintenance at R47 million.
