SAPS and SAHRC sign memorandum on public demonstrations

The South Africa Police Service (SAPS) and the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) commissioner responsible for prevention of torture and law enforcement will sign a memorandum of understanding on Monday.

The aim of the memorandum “will be to promote the observance of‚ respect for and the protection of fundamental human rights amongst the population in order to dissuade the public from instigating and resorting to acts of violence during public demonstrations and protests”.

“SAPS commissioner Riah Phiyega will be signing the memorandum together with SAHRC commissioner Danny Titus”‚ according to a statement.

“SAPS and the SAHRC are concerned and committed to find opportunities to foster greater respect for life‚ property‚ law‚ order‚ rights and freedoms in the country.”
