The N1 freeway at Brakfontein interchange near Pretoria was closed for several hours on Saturday after an articulated truck crashed through the barriers of the overhead N14 bridge and landed on the highway below‚ emergency services said.
Emergency service ER24 said fortunately there were no other vehicles below the bridge when the accident occurred. The driver of the truck escaped unharmed and a passenger sustained only minor injuries.
Emergency services arrived on the scene to find the truck’s cab and part of its trailer lying across the northbound lanes and the remainder of the trailer on the opposite side of the freeway.
It is understood that the truck was driving along the N14 freeway towards Krugersdorp when the accident happened. The cause of the crash is not known.
