Big NUZ's Zim gig doubtful

One of the country's biggest kwaito groups might be forced to cancel its Zimbabwean performance tomorrow due to fears of retaliation for the ongoing xenophobic attacks and threats of a boycott by angry Zimbabweans.

Durban-based multi-award-winning trio Big NUZ fear for their lives, according to director of their record label (Afrotainment) Mthokozisi Khathi, also known as DJ Tira.

"It looks like we're going to cancel," DJ Tira told Sowetan yesterday.

He said they were still talking to downtown Johannesburg-based Zero One One Entertainment, the show's organisers. According to DJ Tira, the trio's leading member Mandla "Mampintsha" Maphumulo has a fear of flying and would have to drive to Zimbabwe for the performance.

"This puts him more at risk," DJ Tira said. Other Big NUZ members include Sbusiso "R-Mashesha" Khomo and Mzi "Danger" Mkhwanazi.

Meanwhile, artists in the Afrotainment stable will join an anti-xenophobia march scheduled for today by government officials, and DJ Tira said he was organising artists like world-famous DJ Black Coffee to join the campaign.

Another show by South African hip-hop star Cassper Nyovest has also been a target of boycotts in protest against the ongoing xenophobic attacks.

Cassper Nyovest, real name Refiloe Phooko, is scheduled to perform in Bulawayo, also in Zimbabwe, on April 25, but the rapper could not be reached for comment to shed light on whether the show will go on. A message circulating on WhatsAPP in Bulawayo reads: "We cannot party and dance to these South African artists that are coming (Big NUZ, Diliza, Cassper Nyovest) when South Africans are killing our brothers!!!

"WE ARE NOT GOING TO ATTEND THEIR SHOWS!!! #StopXenophobia #SpeakOutAgainstXenophobia".

It urges recipients to "pass it on and on".

Zero One One Entertainment chief executive Sammy Washaya could not be reached for comment.

Organiser of Cassper Nyovest's performance, Mdu Mdlongwa of Bulawayo-based 3D Events Management, said the show was "going forward with the masses coming".
