DA: Brain-in-a-bucket doc paid R1.5m

Staff at the Diepkloof mortuary in Soweto believe Dr James Mwesigwa’s “political connections” are behind the delays in disciplinary action against him

In November 2013‚ Mwesigwa was suspended after being accused of taking the brain and heart of a dead woman out of the mortuary in a bucket.

Since then‚ said the Democratic Alliance’s Jack Bloom‚ the mortuary doctor has been on full pay‚ which amounts to R1.54 million.

In March this year‚ doctors at the mortuary refused to work in protest when Mwesigwa was temporarily reinstated.

In a written reply to questions from Bloom‚ Gauteng health MEC Qedani Mahlangu ascribed the delay “a change of representation from both the employee and employer parties”.

The disciplinary hearing against Mwesigwa is scheduled to resume on April 20‚ Mahlangu told Bloom.

A criminal case against Mwesigwa is also still pending‚ said Bloom.
