Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa expressed shock on Friday at the death of radio presenter and traditional singer, Saba Mbixane.

"This legend of the airwaves served the broadcasting industry with laudable excellence for over three decades," Mthethwa said in a statement.

"He was an outstanding broadcaster, cultural activist, talent scout and promoter of indigenous music, especially mbhaqanga."

The minister sent his condolence to Mbixane's family, friends and fans.

"His legacy will live through the SATMA [SA Traditional Music Awards] that will continue to honour the memory of this legend."

The 54-year-old Umhlobo Wenene FM presenter died in hospital on Thursday from injuries sustained in a motorbike accident over two weeks ago.

Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini also sent her condolences to Mbixane's family and friends.

"His untimely passing has robbed us of a skilled, committed broadcaster, who played an important role in the edutainment of children as well as teaching them about African culture, respect for other human beings and responsibility," she said in a statement.

"He played a major role in getting children to appreciate and perform traditional art forms -- including music and dance -- therefore contributing to social cohesion and child protection."

Dlamini said Mbixane was instrumental in instilling pride in the arts and culture of the black South African child.

The Democratic Alliance in the Eastern Cape expressed its condolences.

"DJ Ntozabantwana' was a true friend/Umhlobo Wenene to his listeners and he will be sorely missed on the airwaves," DA provincial chairman Veliswa Mvenya said in a statement.

"We trust that the prayers of his listeners and the grace of God will carry his family through this trying time."
