I did not watch TV or go out with friends: Matric top achiever

The mother of Free State’s top performing learner had to occasionally stop her from studying – as she would study well into the next day.

Ruve Van Rooyen was the province’s top achiever with eight distinctions, including a 100 percent feat in physical science. The Welkom Gimnasium learner also managed distinctions in Afrikaans, English, Mathematics, Life Orientation, Life Sciences, Accounting as well as Advanced Programmed Mathematics.

Van Rooyen’s massive achievements were as a result of hard work, which sometimes put her at odds with her mother Muriel, an Afrikaans teacher at the same school she attended. Muriel said while she was always supportive of her only child throughout the whole of last year, she would often be forced to put her foot down and ask her to leave her books and rest.

“She is a very active child. She takes part in school sports and would sometimes arrive home after 5 pm. She would then focus on her studies and I would sit with her and help her,” Van Rooyen said. With laughter, Muriel recalled how on certain occasions she told her daughter to stop and go to bed.

“I would fall asleep while I was seated there with her. She would keep going and I would be so exhausted and that is when I would tell her that it was late and it was time to go to sleep. She would study way past midnight,” Van Rooyen said.

Ruve meanwhile put her achievements down to hard work. “I did not watch television and I also did not go out with friends. I dedicated my time to studying. It was not easy as I studied until very late, but I knew that it would be worth it in the end,” she said.

She will study to become a chartered accountant at the North West Uiversity. Despite education MEC Tate Makgoe’s efforts to convince her to study engineering, which Makgoe himself studies, Van Rooyen remained steadfast oh her career choice.
