MUVHANGO has warned aspiring actors of a scam that claims to hold auditions for the soapie.

The popular SABC2 soapie reacted after it was inundated with calls on Monday from people who went for auditions at Bassline in Newtown.

According to the advert that Sowetan has seen, Muvhango was searching for a character called Njabulo Chabeli, a lawyer between 30 and 40 years old, who should be a Sotho-speaking male actor with the ability to speak Zulu as well.

It also said they were looking for a young woman to play Carol Chabeli, who is in her late 20s or mid-30s and Sotho-speaking.

The auditions were scheduled to take place on November 24 at Lesotho Sun Conference Centre, the Pacofs offices in Bloemfontein on November 29 and Bassline, Newtown, on Monday.

At the bottom of the advert, the scam included SABC2's publicity team names and contact details to make it look authentic.

Bontle Kayamba, who was among the people who queued for auditions, said about 50 people turned up at Bassline. She said they became aware that it was a scam after contacting an SABC2 staff member who said they were not aware of the auditions.

Muvhango publicist Amanda Ngudle confirmed that the show had never scheduled auditions for Lesotho, Bloemfontein and Newtown. She warned the aspiring stars that whoever posted the advert on social networks wanted to scam them.

"The only audition we know of is the one that took place in Pretoria on Saturday. What makes it even worse is how this person used SABC2 staff names to make it [look] legitimate," she said.

Sam Williams, an agency owner who had sent her clients to audition at Bassline, said she got the information on Facebook under Shikwa's Casting Agency.

Pacofs in Bloemfontein said that there were no auditions or people who wanted to audition on Saturday. Attempts to get comment from Bassline and Shikwa's proved fruitless as both numbers were not working.
