NEIGHBOURS of singer Kelly Khumalo have described the final moments leading up to the shooting and killing of Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa on Sunday night.

Meyiwa was certified dead in hospital moments after the shooting.

Thabang Makeleni, 18, said he saw two people sitting on an electric transformer box outside Khumalo's house at Kutlwanong Street in Mzamo section, Vosloorus, just minutes before the shooting.

"I was passing by after 8pm when I saw two boys sitting on the danger box. A third guy was sitting on a water metre box, while the forth was sitting in a green car," he said.

Makeleni said two of the young men walked into Khumalo's house.

"I heard two gunshots and they came out running. The one with a black top had a gun in his hand.

"The car had left and the three fled on foot. Kelly's mother screamed and the community came out," Makeleni said.

Neighbour Mbuyiselwa Kula, 56, said he heard the shrill of a whistle just after 8pm.

"I realised that it came from Kelly's house. We ran towards the direction where the boys ran but we could not find them.

"I then came back to the house and helped other neighbours to carry Senzo into his car. Kelly drove the car to hospital," said Kula.

Kula and other neighbours described Meyiwa as a jolly, down to earth person who often played football with their children in the street.

"We always spoke about Pirates and when they lost he would say they will come back stronger. I was always happy to see him in our street. He was our captain," he said.

Kula said Meyiwa's killing was the first such incident in their neighbourhood.

Another neighbour, Margaret Mqina, said Meyiwa was always in the neighbourhood.

"To us he was like a neighbour. He was loved by everyone, even the nyaope boys loved him.

"The children will be traumatised because he used to play soccer with them in the street," Mqina said.

Simphiwe Ngwenya, 18, said he last saw Meyiwa at around 7pm when he went to a nearby spaza shop with Khumalo.

"He came here driving a BMW X6. He was wearing a white T-shirt, blue jeans and white sneakers.

"I was washing cars with my friends in the street and he greeted us as always."

Ngwenya said they congratulated him on Pirates' victory over Ajax Cape Town on Saturday evening.

Pirates won that game 4-1. Ngwenya said Meyiwa promised to buy them whiskey the following week.

"He did not act like a celebrity. He was our home boy. He usually bought us cool drinks or left money for us to buy," Ngwenya said.
