iKhondom added to new Xhosa-English dictionary

After three years of research, experts have formally established the isiXhosa word for condom is ikhondom, the Sunday Times reported.

Ikhondom is just one of the many new words contained in the new Xhosa-English dictionary published by the SA division of Oxford University Press this month.

Other new additions included idemokhrasi (democracy), igranti (government social grant), inyukliya (nuclear), iakhawunti (account) and igravithi (gravity).

The publisher's managing director, Steve Cilliers, said that over the three year period, 35 experts sifted through various texts to pick out the most frequently used words to be included in the dictionary.

"It is also the first [dictionary] to include words from across the South African curriculum, such as life cycle, photosynthesis and vertex," Cilliers told the newspaper.
