Rugby too white: Tutu

By Sapa | 2014-08-22 07:42:29.0 | COMMENTS [ 126 ]

Anglican Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu says South Africa deserves to have a Springbok team representative of its rainbow nation, The Star reported on Friday.

"Now, nearly 20 years later, I lament the tortoise pace at which transformation at the highest level is being effected," he said in a letter to The Star's sister paper, The Cape Times.

Tutu criticised the SA Rugby Union (Saru) for the pace of transformation in the team, and said it was "particularly hurtful" to see the selection of black players as "peripheral squad members never given the chance to settle down and earn their spurs."

He said the country deserved a team that represented the "full spectrum of the rainbow that defines us".

"Surely, by the 20th anniversary of our freedom from enforced separateness, there are a couple of dark horses out there to run with the browns and the chestnuts in feature races?"

On Saturday, the Springboks take on Argentina in Salta in the Rugby Championship. Their starting 15 will include three coloured players, and the remaining 12 are white. Two of the eight players on the bench are black.

Bish, sometuimes you need some perspective. It's getting there, but one can't scream about a team not performing well and then also insist that transformation is essential when that transformation is not necessarily merit driven. I know precious little about rugby, but it just stands to reason.

What about soccer tutu? Rugby is far more 'representative' then soccer in this country. At least we have black rugby players.

eish this one is getting old like RobinX, alzheimers is dealing with them - they like searching for racism even where is not there

Your personal jibe there is meaningless and stupid. I have never even bothered to engage you because you are generally so lacking in substance, so why you now choose to mention me is a mystery, other than that your alzheimer's remark is directly stolen from the other prize moron of the site, Vendelirious. Very smart and very mature. Now get lost.

there is no need for excitement of emotions

2014-08-22 09:54:49.0 | 1 replies

excitement of emotions???? Not excited at all. Stupidity and racism don't excite me at all, particularly when issuing from someone with not a grain of sense and far too much racial hatred for his health. So please don't you worry about me. I'm fine. But perhaps a visit to Weskoppies could help with that inbuilt racism that seems to affect your reasoning.

TsietsiM - "they like searching for racism even where is not there" - That is what black people in South Africa do son. If not that, then playing the victim.

Mr Tutu with much respect stay away from sports

2014-08-22 08:27:17.0 | 0 replies

With all due respect Oupa Tutu!! We want the best players to be selected for the Bokke and all sports in this country regardless of the colour of your skin!! Yerr this is so stupid maaaaaaaaaaan.....A prayer will be appreciated for our football though!!

Although Tutu has a point, we blacks are also complaining too much. Take a look at Swimming, Hockey and other so called "white sport" as an example, there are a few black people really showing interest in them (including at school and tertiary level). Rugby has alway been loved by white people the very same way as black people loved Soccer. Lets not make noise about it too much, but encourage the young ones (black, white, green and whatever colour) to partake in any sport they desire. Transformation will take care of itself soon after there are more players (of whatever race or gender, disabled or otherwise) in our beloved country.Lets not cloud our minds with race too much...

i agree with you, everyone should just be free to play/follow the sport they like - if there is enough interest, the rest will sort itself out
