Madonsela investigating Mandela funeral

Public Protector Thuli Madonsela is investigating alleged corruption by Eastern Cape municipalities relating to former president Nelson Mandela's funeral, her office said on Tuesday.

"The public protector is investigating allegations of maladministration, corruption and unconsumable use of public funds by municipalities of the Eastern Cape... ," spokeswoman Kgalalelo Masibi said.

This related to procurement of service providers for Mandela's memorial services and funeral.

Masibi could not immediately say who made the complaints.

She said the provincial government appointed the Eastern Cape Development Corporation as a provincial host and paymaster for the logistical arrangements and the funeral.

The Nelson Mandela metropolitan, OR Tambo, King Sabata Dalindyebo and Buffalo City municipalities were appointed as well, she said.

Madonsela would investigate the municipalities.

They allegedly spent nearly R65 million on service providers for Mandela's funeral without following proper procurement procedures.

Mandela died at his home in Houghton, Johannesburg, on December 5, aged 95. He was buried his homestead in Qunu on December 15.

On Friday, the Mail & Guardian reported that the Hawks were investigating how R250,000 appeared in Eastern Cape premier Phumulo Masualle's bank account around the time of Mandela's funeral.

On Wednesday, the Democratic Alliance said it had raised questions about Masualle's personal bank account in the Eastern Cape legislature, but on two occasions its questions were blocked.

Looks like even our icon was not spared the embarrassment of corruption. If you could disrespect Mandela on his farewell it shows how far some people in our country has sunk. But this is the Eastern Cape.

It seems one must first pass CORRUPTION 101 with distinction in order to be an ANC member. They specialize in corruption. Perhaps that is the main course taught by Tony Yengeni at the ANC's School of Politics. Rotten to the core, from #Number 1 their god to the illiterate municipal manager in Qunu

Exactely, just look at the appointments President Zuma has been making ever since he took over from Mbeki, almost everyone of them were questionable, the only appointment he made which turned out to be the best of them all is Thuli Madonsela, the rest have been scandalous.

they use majority rule to steal from us. I now see almost every Black person behind this because we keep on voting for this useless morons. Madonsela is just wasting time exercising her duties. as long as ANC is in power forget it and SA has got nothing to do with the rule of law and supremacy of the constitution but applying majority rule.

The ANC officials are quite smart hey... Thuli was almost discredited about her findings in the Nkandla report when they saw that the so called President was in hot water as he was required to answer for his actions! Now they bring this new investigation to make us forget about the Nkandla report!! Oh wow, I love my country... Even if the perpetrators are found out they will not get arrested they are just going to be given a different position within the Government and the case will just vanish e.g Bekhi Cele

Then after the investigation is finalised and mismanagement of funds is highlighted, what will happen Thuli because you are not being taken serious by the government?
