Modise denies farm warnings

National Council of Provinces chairwoman Thandi Modise on Sunday denied having ignored warnings about a potential crisis on her North West farm.

"[Modise] had as a new entrant to farming requested for contacts from whom she could source feed and appreciates greatly the expertise advice and valued support that Agri North West management gave her," her spokesman Neo Moepi said in a statement.

It was unfortunate an impression was being created that Modise ignored warnings.

"The allegation that Modise was warned of a potential crisis on her farm by the organisation is far-fetched and a misrepresentation of facts as its involvement was limited to getting her in touch with contacts from whom she could source feed and sell her meat."

Agri North West's executive manager Boeta du Toit told Rapport that Modise said at a meeting that it was not going well with her farm Modderfontein, near Potchefstroom. She was North West premier at the time.

Du Toit told the newspaper he put Modise's political adviser Bejani Chauke in touch with Meadow Feeds, a company that supplies livestock feed. The company's Ferdi van Aswegen went to the farm on November 6, 2013, to assess the matter and deliver five tons of feed Chauke had ordered.

Van Aswegen said what he saw was "heartbreaking" and "shocking" and a worker told him the animals had last been fed two weeks ago. He subsequently called Chauke.

Agri North West's deputy executive manager Naude Pienaar told Rapport: "We really went the extra mile to try and help her".

Last Saturday, police and Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) officials went to the farm and found dead and dying animals. Several of them had to be put down.

There were no farmworkers on the property, no electricity, and the water pumps were broken.

The SPCA has said it would lay criminal charges against those responsible.
