Soweto residents protest over electricity

"Motorists are advised to use alternative routes as it is not safe to drive in the area," Minnaar said.

About 100 residents in Mofolo, Soweto, protested over electricity on Tuesday, Gauteng police said.

Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said it was unclear what the electricity issue was, but a meeting with the relevant parties would be held on Tuesday afternoon to resolve the matter.

The protest began on Monday, when residents blockaded roads in the area with rocks and burning tyres.

"Mmila Road and Mashinini Street are blocked off to motorists," said Makhubela.

Metro police spokesman Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said earlier on Tuesday protests started at Mofolo and Vincent roads.

"Motorists are advised to use alternative routes as it is not safe to drive in the area," Minnaar said.

Protesters were also burning tyres and throwing rocks at passing vehicles on Tuesday morning.

Makhubela said no injuries were reported and no arrests had been made.
