Good and bad news for Miss Sundowns

Eight months after she was crowned the second runner-up at Miss SA 2014, Matlala Mokoko, has been stripped of her title.

This came after the lanky Limpopo beauty showed no regard for the competition rules by entering another pageant within the stipulated contractual time.

The 23-year-old beauty, who hails from Marowe near Bochum and represented Limpopo, won the Miss Mamelodi Sundowns beauty title at a glittering event hosted by Bonang Matheba and Andile Ncube and judged by celebs like Minnie Dlamini and Zizo Beda.

Attended by Patrice Motsepe and Precious Moloi-Motsepe, it was held at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand on Sunday night.

Mokoko beat 17 other young women representing the nine provinces of SA to clinch the staggering R2-million worth of cash and prizes.

Ntombikayise Msimango and Luyolo Mngonyama were first and second princesses.

But her celebration was shortlived when yesterday Sun International's PR manager Claudia Henkel issued a statement denouncing her position.

"Miss Mokoko will, unfortunately, have to relinquish her title as a Miss South Africa second princess she is currently in breach of her contract with Miss South Africa and therefore will have no further obligations to the Miss South Africa pageant or any future events related to the pageant. We wish Matlala a very successful reign and know that she will be a great ambassador to Mamelodi Sundowns."

Mokoko was the second runner-up at the Sun City Superbowl when current Miss SA Rolene Strauss won the title enabling her to compete in international pageants.

By virtue of her being a second runner-up, if Strauss won the Miss World title, the first runner-up Ziphozakhe Zokufa would automatically be elevated to be Miss SA and Mokoko would have become first princess.

Miss Sundowns spokeswoman Kerusha Govender sprang to Mokoko's defence

"Any woman is allowed to enter the pageant whether she has previous titles or not. As long as her contract is not binding and not in conflict with ours. At the moment, from our side there is no contractual breach and if the situation changes that may also change. But currently there is not conflict."

Attempts by Sowetan to reach Mokoko failed.

Mokoko, a decorated netball player, plays for the first team at University of Johannesburg.
