Shrien Dewani walks free

UK businessman Shrien Dewani has been discharged on a count of murdering his wife Anni while on honeymoon in South Africa.

Deputy Judge President Jeanette Traverso granted an application for a discharge in the Western Cape High Court on Monday.

"I make the following order... the application is granted. The accused is found not guilty on this charge."

The case was thrown out of court after Judge Jeanette Traverso said that the state does not have a case against Dewani.

She said that the only way for the state to have a case would have been for Dewani to take a stand and incriminate himself.

“Having regard to the fact that I have already found there’s insufficient evidence upon which a reasonable court acting carefully might convict the only possible reason at this stage for me refusing the application can be the hope that the accused will implicate himself during his evidence. To so will be a manifest misdirection.” said Judge Traverso.

Judge Traverso said that although she feels sorry for the Anni’s family, she cannot allow her emotions in court as that would lead to anarchy.
