The person who attacked a gardener with a sjambok (a heavy leather whip) in Cape Town must turn himself in, the Democratic Alliance said on Monday.
"Reports of the violent sjambok attack of Philippi resident, Muhammed Makungwa, by an unidentified man are upsetting," national spokeswoman Phumzile van Damme said in a statement.
"Makungwa, a gardener, was allegedly severely beaten with a sjambok by an unidentified motorist while on his way to work. He suffered head wounds and bruises to his body as a result."
The DA called on police to find the perpetrator and bring him to book.
"We further call on the man who brutally attacked Muhammed Makungwa to turn himself in at the nearest police station," she said.
"There is no space for such brutality in a democratic South Africa."
Captain FC van Wyk was quoted by IOL.co.za on Monday as stating: "We can confirm a 22-year-old Malawian man was allegedly attacked by a suspect driving a BMW X5 at 6.45am today [Sunday].
"The victim was nearly knocked down and then allegedly beaten with a sjambok. We are appealing to the public to come forward with any information about the incident."
