Pistorius to spend second night in sick ward

Oscar Pistorius has survived his first night in his cell as convict at a hospital wing of Kgosi Mampuru prison in Pretoria.

He will be spending his second night in his orange attire in the highly protected sick ward this evening.

Pistorius was sentenced to five years imprisonment for culpable homicide after shooting and killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

The Paralympics champion was finally sentenced on Tuesday after being on trial for 48 days.

A prison commissioner told South African Press Association (SAPA) that the athlete appeared to be tense and confused when he entered the prison cells.

Although Pistorius’s cell is in a separate wing of the prison, away from all the other prisoners in a highly protected ward, it is reported that he is anxious.

According to Daily Mail, a prison official said that Pistorius seemed to be coping and looked like he did manage to get some sleep.

"I think he did get some rest over night and he looked to me like he was coping with his new situation. He has everything he needs," said Ofentse Morwane.

After attempts of pointing out that the prison’s cannot accommodate disabled people failed, Pistorius lawyer brought up the issue of death threats against him as they argued for a suspended sentence but Judge Thokozile Masipa was not convinced and sent the athlete to prison.

“Now the hospital section of the center accommodates two offenders with prosthetic legs, two blind offenders and five offenders on wheelchairs: Nine in total,” correctional services spokesman Manelisi Wolela.

Pistorius could only serve up to 10 months in prison and would spend the rest of his sentence at the comfort of his uncle’s home since he does not own a home.
